Rideshare is excellent at what it is for, and we use it too. On a short hop across town nothing we do competes. On a long route the question stops being what it costs and starts being whether you can know what it costs, and that is a different question entirely.
The number you are looking at is not a price
Rideshare pricing is generated per request. Two people asking for the same car on the same road at the same moment are routinely quoted different numbers, and neither of them is being cheated. That is simply how the pricing works.
We checked one route, The Pfister to O'Hare, on a Sunday morning in September. A laptop and a phone, signed in to the same account, within the same minute. The two quotes came back roughly a third apart.

What moves it:
- The time of day, and the day of the week
- How much demand there is at the moment you ask
- The device you are asking from
- The account you are signed in to, and what it has booked before
- Membership and promotional discounts attached to that account
None of that is hidden and none of it is wrong. It does mean that a figure quoted on this page would be out of date the moment it was published, and would not match what you see anyway. So there is no figure on this page.
How it came out on the morning we checked

On that Sunday morning both quotes for the run to O'Hare came in above our VIP SUV rate for the same journey, and the higher of the two came in over $100 above our VVIP SUV rate. Ours already had the 20% chauffeur gratuity in it. Neither of theirs had been tipped yet, and a tip adds a fifth on top.
That is the part people miss when they hold the two numbers side by side. They are not the same kind of number. Ours is settled, and the app's is the one that grows after the ride.
One check on one route is not a rate survey and we are not going to present it as one. It is the reason we stopped comparing fares and started comparing what is actually settled before you leave.
What is fixed, and what is left to chance
On these routes the fare is not really the difference. What differs is how much of the trip is settled before you leave, and how much of it is decided at the moment you need the car.

The routes worth comparing
These are the runs where the question is worth asking, all of them from The Pfister Hotel, downtown Milwaukee:
- Chicago O'Hare (ORD) (79 miles)
- Chicago Midway (MDW) (91 miles)
- Downtown Chicago (92 miles)
- Dane County, Madison (MSN) (82 miles)
Ask for a quote on any of them and you will have a flat, all-inclusive number the same day, which you can hold against whatever your app is showing at that moment. That is a better test than a table of ours could ever be, because it is today's and it is your account.
Where a rideshare wins
We are not going to claim the gap holds everywhere. On a short hop, a run to Mitchell from downtown, the numbers are close enough that price is not really the question. What you are choosing there is whether a car is definitely outside at 4:00 AM with a chauffeur who already has your flight number, or whether you are opening an app and hoping. On the long routes the price argument comes back and it comes back in our favor.

Why did my phone show a different price than my laptop?
Rideshare pricing is generated per request rather than read off a rate card, and the request carries more than the route: the time, current demand, the device, the account and whatever discounts are attached to it. Two quotes a minute apart are both real quotes.
Is your quote really the final number?
The quote is the number you pay. All fares, fees, taxes, tolls and chauffeur gratuity are in it, and each line is shown rather than buried. No fuel surcharge, no credit card processing fee, no fees added after the reservation.
Can you pick me up at O'Hare and drive me back to Milwaukee?
Yes, and it is worth knowing why that is not a given. Only vehicles the City of Chicago authorizes may pick up at the airport. Every one of ours carries that registration, so a return leg is booked at the same time as the outbound one rather than arranged from the curb.
What do I get that a rideshare does not?
A chauffeur assigned to you days ahead rather than a request that may not clear, the same vehicle and the same person for the whole trip, and a rate that does not move between booking and traveling.
